Discoid (cutaneous) lupus is limited to skin symptoms and is diagnosed by biopsy of rash on the face, neck, scalp or arms. Systemic lupus attacks multiple systems in the body which may include- the skin, joints, blood, lungs, kidneys, heart, brain & nervous system. Infectious diseases have emerged as one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality, accounting for 29% of all deaths in these patients.
Because the antibodies and accompanying cells of inflammation can affect tissues anywhere in the body, lupus has the potential to affect a variety of areas. Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. Recent research has shown that estrogen can trigger some mild or moderate flares of lupus, but does not cause very severe worsening of symptoms.
