Signs of mono complication

Infection in the area of the tonsil can rarely be a serious abscess referred to as a peritonsillar abscess. If signs of mono is accompanied by a streptococcal infection of the throat, an antibiotic will be prescribed to treat that condition. In severe cases, corticosteroid drugs that reduce swelling may be prescribed.
Another rare complication is swelling of the throat to an extent that breathing is obstructed. Fortunately, Mono tends to be more aggressive in patients with abnormal immune systems, such as people with AIDS or those who are taking medications that suppress immune function.
On rare occasions, the enlarged spleen will rupture if the abdomen is hit or strained.
