Signs of concussion at athletes

Posted on January 19, 2012 | Comments Off

When a person gets a head injury, the brain can move around inside the skull and even bang against it. About 38% of people who suffer a head injury with signs of concussion and no radiological evidence of brain lesions meet these criteria. While dramatic, loss of consciousness or seizure are not common in concussion and do not predict severity.
Concussions are sustained by athletes in many different types of sports including football, soccer, boxing, baseball, softball, basketball, diving, and cheerleading. Because the governing bodies at the college and high school levels do not have rules regarding concussion management, amateur players routinely return after concussions, even if they are evaluated by a doctor or athletic trainer. In rare cases concussions cause more serious problems.
