Hypothyroidism problems
10% of women may have some degree of thyroid hormone deficiency. Symptoms of hypothyroidism may include:
• Fatigue
• Weakness
• Weight gain or increased difficulty losing weight
• Coarse, dry hair
• Dry, rough pale skin
• Hair loss
• Cold intolerance (you can’t tolerate cold temperatures like those around you)
• Muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches
• Constipation
• Depression
• Irritability
When newborns do have problems with hypothyroidism, they may include: Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice). In most cases, this occurs when a baby’s liver can’t metabolize a substance called bilirubin, which normally forms when the body recycles old or damaged red blood cells. Up to 10% of women over the age of 65 show some signs of hypothyroidism.
