Common Sympthoms of Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism is when your thyroid gland, located at the front of your neck, produces too much thyroid hormone, causing your metabolism to speed up. The most common symptoms of hyperthyroidism include: trembling of the hands, hard or irregular heartbeat, irritability and anxiety, shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle weakness, increased bowel movement, hair loss, and warm moist skin. Patients with hyperthyroidism usually experience fatigue at the end of the day, but have trouble sleeping. In older people, some or all of the typical symptoms of hyperthyroidism may be absent, and the patient may just lose weight or become depressed. Treatment is usually effective in reducing thyroid over activity. It may include: medicines, radioiodine and surgery. Betablockers can ease some of the symptoms. Long-term follow-up is important, even after successful treatment.
